MUMBAI, INDIA — Bollywood action star Tiger Shroff escaped unhurt after gunmen opened fire on his car in the Juhu area of Mumbai on Sunday evening, October 18, in an incident that has drawn national attention and renewed scrutiny of threats against film celebrities. The story is trending per news coverage across India and beyond. According to police, the firing took place at around 7 pm as Shroff was leaving a football club in Juhu after playing football. His driver, identified as Firdaus, and an autorickshaw driver were injured in the shooting. The Mumbai Police have formed 15 teams to investigate the incident from multiple angles, and three suspects were arrested on Monday in Kota, Rajasthan, as investigators examine an alleged link to the Lawrence Bishnoi gang.
What happened in Juhu on Sunday evening
Preliminary police accounts, as reported by news agencies ANI and PTI, describe a brief but violent attack near Pushpa Park under Juhu police station limits in Mumbai's western suburb. Shroff had been playing football at a club in the area and was heading home when assailants opened fire on his car. Reports indicate about five rounds were fired at the vehicle. According to Mumbai Police DCP Mohit Garg, the actor narrowly escaped injury. Shroff did not sustain gunshot injuries, but Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said the actor suffered injuries to his hand from gunpowder and glass fragments; earlier reports described minor gunpowder burns. Shroff's driver Firdaus sustained an injury to his left hand, and the autorickshaw driver, identified only as Chauhan, was also injured. Both were rushed for medical treatment.
The incident triggered an immediate, high-profile response. Shinde visited Tiger Shroff's residence on Sunday night along with the actor's mother, Ayesha Shroff, who police said was shaken by the attack. The Deputy Chief Minister assured the family of the state government's support and said strict action would be taken, adding that threats against public figures would not be tolerated.
Three arrests in Kota and the alleged escape plan
The breakthrough in the investigation came within hours. Investigators used CCTV footage from Andheri West railway station, where the suspects were seen at approximately 7:06 pm on Sunday, to identify the alleged shooters. Police say the accused abandoned the motorcycle used in the attack outside Andheri station before fleeing; the vehicle was seized and its registration details, number plate, chassis number and engine number are being examined to establish its history and ownership.
Mumbai Police shared the information and CCTV footage with their counterparts in Rajasthan. A senior Kota police officer said the three suspects were detained within 15 minutes of receiving the information. Kota City Police SP Tejaswani Gautam told ANI that the accused were apprehended at the Kota railway station while travelling on the Pune-Jaipur Express in a general compartment. Two of the accused are residents of Haryana and one hails from Bihar; earlier reports indicated one suspect was picked up from the Railway Colony area of Kota. Weapons have not been recovered yet, and police said the accused will be interrogated to determine what was done with the firearms. According to SP Gautam, the suspects planned to reach Delhi and then flee toward Nepal. The Kota City Police said they would hand over all three accused to the Mumbai Police.
The alleged Lawrence Bishnoi gang connection
A key line of investigation centres on the Lawrence Bishnoi gang. Kota SP Gautam said preliminary investigation showed the shooters were linked to a man identified as Anil Pandit, who is affiliated with the gang. Separately, a social media post circulated widely after the attack claiming responsibility on behalf of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang. The Mumbai Police have not yet verified the authenticity of that post, and the gang's claim remains unconfirmed.
According to reports citing the viral post, the gang claimed the actor had been warned over the phone and was targeted for attempting to work with fellow Bollywood star Salman Khan. The post reportedly warned that others collaborating with Khan could also be targeted, ending with the message "Wait and watch." Another report identified Anil Pandit as having claimed responsibility in a viral audio message in which he issued threats against Bollywood figures and demanded an apology from Salman Khan; these claims are similarly unverified and remain part of the ongoing investigation.
Whether the gang link is ultimately proven or not, the incident fits a pattern of threats against Bollywood celebrities that investigators have attributed to the Bishnoi network. Authorities are working to establish the full chain of command — including who allegedly ordered the attack — and the investigation is continuing.
A pattern of threats against Bollywood celebrities
Tiger Shroff is the latest in a series of prominent Bollywood figures to be targeted by threats allegedly linked to the Lawrence Bishnoi gang. Salman Khan has been a major focus of the gang for years, with threats often linked to the 1998 blackbuck poaching case. Khan has received multiple threatening emails and phone calls, and in April 2024 gunmen opened fire outside his Galaxy Apartments residence in Mumbai — an attack allegedly linked to the gang in which Anmol Bishnoi was named.
Other celebrities who have reportedly received threats or extortion demands allegedly linked to the gang include Ranveer Singh, filmmaker Rohit Shetty and actor Aayush Sharma. Reports say Singh received an extortion demand of ₹10 crore through WhatsApp voice messages sent from a US-based number, with the sender claiming to be Hari Chand Jaat, also known as Harry Boxer, said to be linked to the Bishnoi gang. The gang's reach, with operatives reportedly coordinating from within India and abroad, has made celebrity security a persistent concern for Mumbai Police.
These precedents matter because they frame the Tiger Shroff case as potentially more than an isolated attack. If the Bishnoi connection is established, it would mark an escalation: from threats and firing outside a residence to an armed assault on a star's moving vehicle in one of Mumbai's busiest neighbourhoods. Investigators will be asking whether the attack was intended as a genuine assassination attempt or as a warning shot — literally and figuratively — directed at Salman Khan's wider circle.
Who is Tiger Shroff?
Tiger Shroff, the son of actor Jackie Shroff and Ayesha Shroff, is one of Bollywood's best-known action stars. He debuted in the 2014 film Heropanti and built his reputation on physically demanding action roles in the Baaghi franchise and other films. Known for his martial arts skills and dance ability, he has a large fan following among younger audiences. The actor was recently in the spotlight for action projects, with some reports referring to him as the star of the War franchise. The attack on a mainstream film star with his public profile — coming soon after the football ground in a residential neighbourhood, a setting far from the film sets and award shows usually associated with celebrity life — is part of why the incident has resonated so widely.
What happens next in the investigation
The three accused will be transferred from Kota to Mumbai, where investigators plan to interrogate them to recover the weapons and map the alleged chain of command. Police are expected to examine phone records, financial trails and the social media accounts linked to the responsibility claim. Whether the alleged Bishnoi gang link holds up will determine how the case is prosecuted and what additional charges may follow.
For Mumbai Police, the case is a high-stakes test. The city has long dealt with organised crime targeting the film industry — from extortion calls to shootings — and the swift arrests in Kota show how inter-state coordination and CCTV networks can compress what used to be weeks of manhunt work into hours. But questions remain: who financed and ordered the attack, whether the viral responsibility claim is authentic, and what security measures will protect public figures going forward.
For now, the actor and his family are safe, the suspects are in custody, and the investigation that began with gunfire in Juhu has moved into its most crucial phase — the interrogation room. As with other high-profile shooting investigations, such as the probe into the foiled shooting plot against a Hindu temple in Aurora and the school shooting in Bend, Oregon that rocked the United States earlier this month, the world will be watching how quickly investigators can move from arrests to answers.
