Kimi Antonelli won the 2026 United States Grand Prix from pole position on Sunday 25 October, beating Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen in Austin — but he did not win the world championship. Not yet. The Mercedes driver's dominant victory at Circuit of The Americas, his ninth win of the season, stretched his championship lead to 123 points with five races remaining. Because Lewis Hamilton finished fourth and George Russell eighth, the mathematics stayed open, and the title fight now moves to Mexico City, where Antonelli needs just two more points to seal it. Here are the F1 US Grand Prix 2026 results in full, what decided the race, and what happens next.

Antonelli had already set the tone in qualifying, taking pole position with a 1:34.035 lap, his seventh pole of 2026, ahead of Verstappen and Hadjar. From there, the race became an exercise in control rather than a contest.
How Antonelli won in Austin
Antonelli held the lead from pole on medium tyres. Verstappen, starting on soft tyres, fell behind both Ferraris at the first corner, with Leclerc briefly second, before retaking second place before the end of the opening lap. Verstappen then reported deployment problems and described his car as undriveable at times, while Hadjar reported an incorrect mapping setting affecting his throttle. Neither issue changed the outcome at the front.
The race was decided by strategy. Antonelli ran a one-stop race, switching from medium to hard tyres, while most of his rivals stopped twice. That gave him track position he never lost, and his pace on the hard tyre was enough to keep Leclerc — who finished strongly after passing Norris and then Verstappen for second — at a safe distance. Hamilton also passed Norris for fourth, a result that mattered far beyond the podium because it kept the championship alive.
There was no full safety car. The race was neutralised twice under virtual safety car conditions only: briefly on lap 2 for debris after early contact at the back, and again late in the race when Bottas pulled his Cadillac to the side of the track, which froze the order into the final lap without changing the lead. McLaren swapped Piastri and Norris to put Norris ahead, and Haas swapped Bearman and Ocon to favour Ocon's undamaged car, but neither swap affected the winner.
Qualifying versus finish: who gained, who lost
The race reshuffled the qualifying order in instructive ways. Antonelli converted pole into victory without ever losing the lead, the cleanest possible outcome. Leclerc was the biggest gainer at the front, turning fourth on the grid into second at the flag through a combination of a strong start and late-race pace that carried him past both Norris and Verstappen. Hamilton also improved, from fifth to fourth, a single position that nonetheless decided the championship mathematics. On the other side, Verstappen slipped from second on the grid to third, his soft-tyre start costing him positions at the first corner that he only partly recovered. Hadjar fell furthest among the frontrunners, from third in qualifying to sixth at the finish, while Russell dropped from sixth to eighth after his five-second penalty and time spent behind Piastri. Further back, the pattern repeated: Lawson climbed into the points in ninth, Gasly took the final point in tenth, and Hülkenberg finished eleventh, one place short of scoring. The picture is of a race where starting position mattered — nobody outside the top ten on the grid scored — but where tyre strategy and late pace still decided the podium order.
Penalties and incidents
Two in-race penalties shaped the midfield. George Russell received a five-second penalty for leaving the track and gaining an advantage on lap 1 in a fight with Piastri, a penalty that contributed to his eighth-place finish after starting sixth. Oliver Bearman received a ten-second penalty while running in 18th, before later retiring with damage on lap 24. There was also early contact at the back of the field, including between Fernando Alonso and Alexander Albon, and Bearman clashed with Pierre Gasly before his penalty.
Three drivers carried grid penalties into the race for exceeding power-unit component allocations: Lindblad, Colapinto, and Bortoleto. Lance Stroll started from the pit lane after Parc Fermé changes and additional power-unit elements. The three retirements were Bottas on lap 48, Colapinto on lap 35, and Bearman on lap 24, with Bottas's stoppage attributed to a suspected power-unit issue. The fastest lap of the race is reported as Charles Leclerc's 1:37.976 on lap 42; that figure comes from secondary timing data rather than the official result page, so it is reported here as reported, not as an official classification.
F1 championship standings after the US Grand Prix
Antonelli now leads the drivers' championship with 365 points. Behind him, Russell has 242, Hamilton 241, Verstappen 236, and Leclerc 233. The arithmetic is simple and dramatic: Antonelli leads Russell by 123 points with 125 points available across the final five races, so he needs only two more points — ninth place or better in Mexico — to clinch the title regardless of what his rivals do. Verstappen, 129 points behind, and Leclerc, 132 behind, are now mathematically out of the championship. Only Antonelli, Russell, and Hamilton can still win it.
In the constructors' championship, Mercedes leads with 607 points, ahead of Ferrari on 474, Red Bull on 355, and McLaren also on 355. Ferrari actually out-scored Mercedes in Austin, 30 points to 29, narrowing the gap by a single point to 133 — but that is a footnote against a lead built over eighteen rounds. The remaining order is Racing Bulls on 102, Alpine on 69, Haas on 30, Audi on 23, Williams on 12, Aston Martin on 7, and Cadillac on 0. Neither home team scored in Austin: Haas finished 14th and last among classified runners with Ocon while Bearman retired, and Cadillac finished 19th with Pérez while Bottas retired.
No sprint race at Austin in 2026
Readers searching for this weekend may find sprint-race reports from Austin in previous years. There was no sprint race at the 2026 United States Grand Prix. Austin returned to the traditional format of three practice sessions, qualifying, and a 56-lap Grand Prix. The 2026 sprint venues were China, Miami, Canada, Great Britain, the Netherlands, and Singapore; Miami hosted the United States' sprint race this year. Any sprint result attributed to Austin in 2026 belongs to an earlier season and should not be confused with this weekend's Grand Prix.
What happens next: Mexico City
The championship now heads to the Mexico City Grand Prix on 1 November, the first of five remaining races: Mexico, Brazil on 8 November, Las Vegas on 21 November, Qatar on 29 November, and Abu Dhabi on 6 December. Antonelli arrives as the overwhelming favourite, needing only a ninth-place finish to become champion regardless of anyone else's result — and, as Reuters notes, standing on the brink of becoming Formula 1's youngest-ever champion. Russell, one point ahead of Hamilton, must win and hope Antonelli stumbles badly to keep his own hopes alive; Hamilton, one point behind Russell, needs the same. For everyone else, the remaining races are about pride, prize money, and 2027 momentum.
Austin did not crown a champion, but it clarified almost everything else. Antonelli was fastest in qualifying, fastest over a race distance, and tactically the sharpest team on the pit wall. Leclerc's late charge confirmed Ferrari's race pace even as its title hopes faded. Verstappen's podium, achieved in a car he called undriveable, underlined why he remains a threat even in a season that has slipped away. Mexico will almost certainly settle the drivers' title; the only question is whether it takes one race or several more.
