United Kingdom — Country Guide
Overview
The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is a sovereign country in northwestern Europe. It comprises four constituent countries: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. London is the capital and largest city.
Geography
The UK is an island nation, occupying the island of Great Britain plus the northeastern part of the island of Ireland and many smaller islands. Its terrain ranges from the lowlands and rolling hills of southern England to the mountains of Scotland and Wales, with a long, varied coastline.
Culture
British culture blends long-standing traditions with modern multicultural influences. The country is known for its literature, music, theatre, and sporting traditions — including the origins of association football, rugby and cricket. Distinct national identities and traditions exist within England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
Languages
English is the predominant language throughout the UK. Welsh has official status in Wales, Scottish Gaelic is recognized in Scotland, and Irish is recognized in Northern Ireland. Many community languages are spoken in the UK's diverse cities.
Travel
The UK is a popular destination for its historic cities, countryside and cultural institutions. Entry requirements depend on nationality and change over time; travellers should check current rules with official UK government sources before travelling.
Government
The UK is a parliamentary constitutional monarchy: the monarch is head of state while executive power is exercised by the prime minister and cabinet. Legislative power rests with Parliament at Westminster, comprising the House of Commons and the House of Lords. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have devolved governments with powers over areas such as health and education.
Education
Education is compulsory for children and is administered separately in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, with some differences in curriculum and qualifications. The UK is home to some of the world's oldest universities, alongside a large modern higher-education sector.
Major cities
London is the capital and by far the largest city. Other major cities include Birmingham and Manchester in England, Edinburgh and Glasgow in Scotland, Cardiff in Wales, and Belfast in Northern Ireland.
Currency
The currency is the pound sterling (GBP), denoted by the symbol £. It is divided into 100 pence.
Time zones
The UK uses Greenwich Mean Time (GMT, UTC+0) in winter and British Summer Time (BST, UTC+1) during the warmer months.
Useful facts
The UK Parliament meets at the Palace of Westminster in London. The country uses miles on road signs and pints in pubs — a blend of imperial and metric usage. The BBC, founded in the 1920s, is one of the world's oldest national broadcasters.
